Niiko - photograph 50 x 80
One visit out to collect leaves, the forest was in a spectacular phase. There were glassy bright red berries up high in dense clusters, alongside large, pink, coral-like flowers that had burst from yellow pockets. The triangular pockets were resting on the ground among berries, some dropped pink blooms, and the leaves I was after. The colour was intense, and all about were the metal-greens of the hard striped columnar trunks forcing upward from a beautifully littered forest floor.
You can forget where you are and at the same time be more clear than ever about where you find yourself standing.

My good friend Nicole Freeman came with me to the forest. It is the place from where most of these Nikau leaves came. Nicole is a photographer and we some raised eyebrows that day while she took the shots. I think some visitors to the forest got more than they bargained for.
